Brief History

The existing Matlacha Bridge is a single span bascule (movable) bridge which provides the only vehicular access from Matlacha and the mainland to the Greater Pine Islands over Matlacha Pass in Charlotte Harbor.  The bridge is owned and operated by Lee County.  This two lane bridge carries one lane of vehicular traffic in each direction.  The existing bridge is considered to be “functionally obsolete” in part due to narrow lanes and the absence of shoulders.  The current roadway width is not adequate to maintain two lanes of traffic if a vehicle breaks down on the bridge.  In addition, the bridge has deteriorated as a result of exposure to salt water.

Previous Studies

A previous study conducted by the County concluded that construction of a new bridge is more cost effective than to continually repair the existing bridge.  Although the study indicated that the existing bridge could provide about 10 more years of service, continuing repairs are not only expensive but could result in unanticipated traffic disruption.

An alignment study was conducted by the County in 2006-2007 to evaluate alternative concepts for a replacement bridge.  Public meetings were held to obtain input from the community.  The graphics and meeting materials from those meetings can be viewed on this website.

Issues related to fishing on the bridge and the need for restrooms were raised by the community during the study.  Construction of a fishing pier, adjacent to the existing bridge was considered.  This option was eliminated later in the study.  A fishing pier is not included in the ongoing construction project or currently planned.  In addition, a vendor, which would have been associated with a restroom facility to accommodate fisherman was also considered but eliminated.  However, a restroom facility is planned for construction on the property formerly occupied by the Snook Inn, on the southwest end of the bridge.

As a result of the study the proposed bridge concept on an alignment just south of the existing bridge was determined to be the best option.
